Shingles is an infectious disease, due to the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (of the herpes virus family) occurring long after a chickenpox. The rash often occurs on the chest, but can affect other parts of the body.

After an episode of chickenpox, the virus responsible for this disease remains hidden in the body, temporarily inactivated by our immune system. It then lodges in our nervous ganglia and wisely waits for an opportunity to wake up. This latency can last for decades, and even sleep   forever, but for reasons still unexplained, it happens that the virus reactivates, with its share of discomfort and suffering.

Shingles can affect different parts of the body:

• about once in two, the thorax: this is an intercostal zona;

• the thoraco-lumbar region;

• lower abdomen

• with possible damage to the genitals;

• the neck ;

• the face.

The viral infection is characterized by the appearance of red and painful vesicles, generally affecting only one side of the body. An intense burning sensation is sometimes felt, making the affected areas extremely sensitive to contact.
